What is Guided Bone Regeneration?
Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR) is a reliable technique for regenerating lost jawbone to facilitate the placement of dental implants.
GBR is used for a number of reasons, which may include:
- Preserving bone at the time of tooth extraction to limit jaw bone atrophy
- Preserving bone for future placement of dental implants
- Regenerating bone loss after tooth removal
- Restore lost bone volume in areas where teeth have been extracted in the past and the jaw bone has atrophied
- Restore lost gum and bone volume following trauma.
Typically guided bone regeneration is an initial step prior to a dental implant procedure in sites where bone has been lost as a result of trauma or disease. The use of dental implants has become a widespread and a more predictable treatment option for the restoration of missing teeth. The GBR technique has enhanced the outcome of functional, biological and aesthetic results of dental implants. Furthermore it has made the placement of dental implants possible in patients who were previously told they were not candidates for this therapeutic option.
